April 17, 2011: Fried Egg Hamburger Recipe
I’ve been seeing this dish show up a lot on restaurant menus lately. I think the last time was while I was visiting my son and daughter-in-law in Mesa and went to Village Inn for breakfast. Right after we were seated, a group of ladies came in for brunch and one of them collapsed on the floor; the manager called 911 and the EMTs arrived. Amidst the trauma unfolding right next to us, we tried to act casual and study the menu. My son opted for the hamburger with fried egg on top. I was trying to be good, calorie-wise, so while I enviously watched him eat it, I was secretly wishing I’d ordered the same thing.
Well, diet be damned! My husband and I grilled hamburgers the other night and we had a couple left over. I thought, why not eat one for breakfast and add an egg? I did a quick search online to see if there was any special recipe. There really isn’t. Basically you just need to make your favorite hamburger and add an egg, but I’ll share with you what I did.
Fried Egg Hamburger
Our burgers were made from about one pound of 80/20 ground beef; we divided it into four pieces and shaped them into patties. We don’t add anything to the meat; instead we just sprinkle McCormick’s Grill Mates Montreal Steak Seasoning on top.
For cheese we added slices of sharp cheddar, Colby Jack, and Havarti.
To assemble my fried egg burger, I started by toasting a bun spread with butter. I warmed up the cheeseburger and add a sprinkle of dried fried onions. I put strips of green chile on the top bun, then fried one egg and placed it on top of the burger. Voila! Even though I broke my yolk (drat!) and my egg came out more over medium than over easy, this was a very delicious (and very high in calories) breakfast!
Of course, you can customize your burger any way you want. Next time I might add lettuce and tomatoes or a slice of fresh onion. Pickles would be good, and so would ketchup. Experiment until you find the perfect combination.
